Asalha Puja
~ By Ajahn Jayasāro ~
Today is Asalha Puja day, the day when we commemorate the teaching of the Dhammacakkha Sutta, the Buddha’s first discourse.
It might be said that the July (Asalha) full moon day, exactly two months after the Buddha’s enlightenment, signified the birth of Buddhism.
On that day, through his great wisdom and compassion, the Buddha was able to translate his profound understanding of reality – an understanding that transcended all concepts and language – into words for the first time. Through this first act of teaching his Buddhahood became complete.
On that day, the Dhamma became manifest in the world. Teachings that described the human condition and those that prescribed the best response to that condition were delivered in a masterful way that thrilled, inspired and illuminated the minds of the Buddha’s audience. Through this manifestation, the Dhamma became complete.
On that day, five rather resentful ascetics became the first bhikkhu disciples of the Buddha. Of these, the one named Kondañña became the first person to realize Stream Entry, the initial level of enlightenment. Through the appearance of both the conventional and noble Sangha, the Sangha became complete.
Bearing in mind the auspiciousness of the day, may we all spend it in a way that best expresses our gratitude and appreciation.
