Owata Patimokkha Hall

Gather for the Buddha’s first teaching

Owata Patimokkha Hall.jpg

Owata Patimokkha refers to the principal teachings the Buddha delivered on the full moon day of the ninth month after his enlightenment: to refrain from unwholesome deeds, to cultivate wholesome deeds, and to purify the mind.

On that day, in Veruvana Vihara near the city of Rajgriha, which was the capital of the ancient northern Indian kingdom of Makot, 1,250 disciples gathered for the first time without prior notice and listened to this teaching.

Owata Patimokkha Hall features copies of this teaching. It also houses the reproduction of the Buddha image from Mount Buddhathong, the open-air chapel (uposatha) at Suan Mokkh.

Unlike temples in Bangkok, where ornate and glitzy buildings are erected to serve as consecrated spaces for important ceremonies and events, at Suan Mokkh it is a hilltop scattered with rocks, trees and a lone Buddha image.
